Etymology Of Name

Memphis comes from the Egyptian word mennefer, meaning ‘his beauty’. Glycerium may come from the Greek glykys, meaning sweet.

Habitat

The Angled Leafwing prefers disturbed subtropical forests and edges.

Life history

Their flights are swift and strong. Males perch to watch for females. Females lay eggs on host plant leaves. Caterpillars hatch and feed on host plant leaves until they are ready to pupate.

Flights

The wet season form flies from June to September, and the dry season form flies in October. A specific group in South Texas flies in July.

Fun Facts

Young caterpillars will form a perch from a leaf midvein to rest upon and feed from. Older caterpillars will form a shelter from a rolled leaf to protect from predators.
